Follow up on Anxious Generation
Anxious Generation:
A Continued Conversation
Oceans of ink have been spilled in the last couple of years about the harmful effects of social media and smartphones. And at times, we as parents can feel overwhelmed by the coverage, wondering what we are supposed to do with all of it. In addition to reading and recommending Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt last year, I’ve been a regular subscriber and reader of his Substack After Babel. In it he posts follow ups, ongoing research, encouragement, and results of people adopting the four norms that he proposed in Anxious Generation. A number of his posts are written by guest authors as well, which is revealing a growing ecosystem of voices that are beating the same drum, “We need to help our kids form better digital habits in a world that is increasingly technological.” It’s easier to teach digital habits when your kids are young and haven’t been given a smartphone, but what if you’re late to the game and they already have one? Haidt’s most recent guest article by Andrea Davis of Better Screen Time tackles that question head on. It’s well worth a five minute read to find strategies that will right the ship.
